English Translation of Egypt’s 2013 Draft Constitution

BY EGYPTSOURCE

With a popular referendum on Egypt’s draft constitution expected in January, the final draft has been submitted to interim President Adly Mansour for his approval. The referendum is expected to take place in the first or second week of January. Doing away with much of the original 2012 constitution drafted under ousted president Mohamed Morsi, the ‘amended’ constitution has seen significant changes made to it by the fifty member committee tasked with making the changes.

The constitution, which makes reference to the “January 25 – June 30 Revolution,” has found the support of several political parties and movements, among them are the Nasseriest Karama Party, the leftist Popular Socialist Party and Popular Current.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party has rejected it, saying that the referendum will be rigged. The Islamic Party and Islamic Jihad, which are part of the pro-Morsi National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, have also rejected the constitution. Tamarod, the group behind the grassroots movement pushing for Morsi’s ouster, have also expressed support for the document. The Salafi Nour Party is the only Islamist party to have expressed support for the document, and participated in its drafting.
