UAE takes over Berbera Port of Somaliland

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today received President of Somaliland, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo and his high-profile ministerial delegation.

President Silanyo signs a historic agreement with UAE officials that focuses on wide range of areas that the UAE will support Somaliland.

Somaliland president on behalf of SL people presented a gift on Somaliland flag to the UAE Vice President.

It is official now that president Silanyo has authorized the privatization of Berbera port and from now on Dubai Ports World will soon assume the takeover of running the port, a strategic port in the hostile region in the Horn of Africa.

President Ahmed Silanyo of Somaliland has put the pen to paper by officially signing a deal with DPW.

Details of the deal is still unknown to Somaliland concerned citizens. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Somaliland government officials and the Dubai Ports World.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Suleiman, DPW chairperson signed the agreement while Somaliland minister for foreign affairs, Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire has signed on behalf of Somaliland.

DPW will invest hugely by modernizing and expanding the port in order to compete with other ports in the region.

The UAE will also invest in the realization of Berbera Corridor road that links Somaliland to Ethiopia.

Other agreements include the support of agriculture, energy, electricity and tourism.

The UAE will build the five-star hotel in one of the resorts in Berbera. UAE will play a huge role in training SL government employees in order to reach the aim of good governance.
